MFM Daily Devotional 25 May 2023 MESSAGE
Genuine love for God and His ways was an outstanding feature of Jonathan’s life. “And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few (1 Samuel 14:6). It takes a man that has genuinely pursued God, knew and understood His ways to utter such a statement. From all indications, Jonathan had a heart for God.
Although, he was a daring fighter, he never took God out of his calculations. He knew that one with God is majority. He committed his ways unto the Lord and that gave him the needed victory. A lot of people have been defeated in life simply because they felt they could run life on their skills and influences. They learned too late that except the Lord builds the house, they labour in vain that build it. How much do you pant after God? How much of God do you desire to know? You only know as much as you want to know.
Another lesson coming from Jonathan’s knowledge of God is the fact he refused to be an accomplice of evil with his bitter father. His heart was pure. He would not allow his father’s rashness and bitterness to rub off on him. Although he seems to love his father and tried as much as possible to be a good son to him, he refused to be a partaker of his iniquity. He knew the demand of God and was willing to put God above all else. On different occasions, he rebuked his father for being out of tune with what was right (1 Samuel 14:29).
He didn’t allow sentiments to becloud him to the righteous ways of God. He spoke and stood against his father’s rashness. 1 Samuel 19:1-6 tells of how Saul wanted Jonathan to be an accomplice with him to kill David; Jonathan spoke his father out of murder. Again, I ask, how much do you love the God you claim to be serving? If it means losing some earthly relationships to please God, would you still carry on?
